Here is another edition of PragoMedia’s Monthly AI Platform Usage Report, where we track the world’s most-used AI chatbots and analyze how the competitive landscape is evolving month by month.

Looking at the latest market share figures from Statcounter, two main trends emerge: ChatGPT continues to build on its massive lead, and Google Gemini is steadily solidifying its position in second place. Further down the list, specialty platforms like Perplexity, Claude, and Copilot saw small pullbacks.

ChatGPT Holds a Massive Lead

OpenAI remains the clear market leader. Almost 80% of all chatbot referrals went to ChatGPT in August, up slightly from 77.9% in July.

This dominance comes down to simple habit. For most people, “ChatGPT” is synonymous with AI. It’s the default tool for writing, coding, and basic research. Between frequent updates and strong adoption by businesses, users simply haven’t had a compelling reason to look elsewhere.

Gemini Crosses 10%

While ChatGPT holds the top spot comfortably, Google Gemini is quietly mounting a real challenge. Gemini grew its market share from 9.9% to 10.9% month-over-month, crossing a significant double-digit benchmark.

Google’s main strength here is frictionless access. By embedding Gemini into Android, Gmail, Docs, and Search, Google puts its assistant directly in front of people where they already work daily. That built-in distribution is starting to deliver measurable returns.

Pressure on Specialized Tools

It was a tougher month for niche and workflow-focused alternatives:

  • Perplexity (4.31%): Despite strong loyalty among analysts and journalists who rely on grounded search citations, Perplexity’s overall share dipped in August. As primary models improve their internal search features, standalone research tools have a narrower path to stand out.
  • Microsoft Copilot (2.79%) & Claude (2.57%): Both tools dropped slightly in web referral share. However, these numbers don’t tell the full story. A big chunk of Copilot’s daily activity happens natively inside Office 365 and Windows rather than web links. Similarly, Claude’s footprint sits heavily in developer environments and background API usage.

The Takeaway

Rather than spreading out across dozens of popular tools, consumer AI usage is centralizing around a couple of giants. ChatGPT holds the dominant standard, Gemini is carving out a clear second position, and everyone else is battling for space within the remaining 10% of web traffic.

We’ll monitor these numbers over the coming months to see if late-2026 product releases alter the trajectory.
